WHY COMPARISON IS MAKING YOU UNHAPPY

A flower does not think of the competing flower next to it.

It just blooms.

The light hits your face as you resurface to awaken; it’s a new day. You pick up the phone to silence the alarm and like muscle memory, your fingers hover over Instagram. You know you have other things, better things to do; and yet, the red notification bubble seems to beckon you with a call you cannot resist. The FOMO is too real; and you are too curious. So you click.

And like a tidal wave, the all too familiar feeling of envy washes over you. The effortless sun-kissed beach barbie frolicking on the beach. The girl from your high school you secretly hated announcing her engagement to the guy you secretly loved. And Lord please, not another perfect young family photo to remind you that time is slipping away, making a mockery of all your life plans. All of a sudden the commitments of the day seem trivial and you sink back into the covers feeling deflated and exhausted. Deeply unhappy.

Comparison is an apex predator disguised in sheep’s clothing. Seemingly harmless, we scroll through the pages of social media; measuring our body type, lifestyle, and social circles against an impossible standard. In this tech age, never before has it it been easier for one to compare themselves against the world. We harbor resentment towards ourselves and towards those who have what we do not in privacy, and wonder why we struggle with authentic friendships and fulfillment in public.

It is high time to expose the comparison lie that by somehow pitting ourselves against one another it somehow elevates or increases our own status or ego. The dangerous deception that says if she is put down, I will be pulled up. It is a viper of a story; and it is time to change the narrative. As one who struggles daily with comparison, I find that the antidote powerful enough to destroy this poisonous struggle is to stand on the truth of not who I wish I could be, but who I already AM.

But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God's special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.

1 Peter 2:9

You are CHOSEN. ROYAL. HOLY. SPECIAL. LIGHT. Beloved, you are fearfully and wonderfully created to stand on your own. An original masterpiece unlike any other. Somewhere along our journey we came across a lie that said we weren’t enough, and we believed it. The good news is, we don’t have to stay enslaved to these chains, for we have been given a spirit of power, love, and a sound mind! In the moments you find yourself tempted to compare, preach the truth to your heart.

The brilliant thing about tapping into the assurance of who you are is that it opens up your capacity to genuinely celebrate with those around you. When you are able to rejoice in the beautiful complexity of YOU, all of a sudden you begin to adopt the delight of others. No longer are you enslaved to a scarcity mindset when you realize that we are designed by a God who never runs out of love and affection for his children.

A revelation of your unique worth over comparison is far better than happiness. Know your inherent value and you will know unshakable joy from the bottom up, spilling out and over a world hungry for more than just happy.

She is more precious than jewels; and nothing you desire compares with her.

Proverbs 3:15
